In computing, an image scanner scanner is often abbreviated simply a device that optically scans images, printed texts, manuscripts, or object, and turns it into a digital image. Common examples are found in offices are variants of the desktop scanner where the document is placed on the scanner glass. Handheld scanners, the device is moved by hand, have evolved from text scanning, reverse engineering, test and measurement, orthotics, gaming and other applications. Power-driven scanners that move the paper commonly used for large format documents in a flatbed design would be impractical.
Modern scanners typically use a charge-coupled device, or as a Contact Image Sensor Image Sensor, while the old drum scanners use photomultiplier tubes of the image sensor. Rotating Scanner, used for high-speed scanning, a second drum scanner, using a CCD array instead of photomultiplier. Other types of scanners are planetary scanners, which take photographs of books and documents.
Another category of scanner is to scan a digital camera, which are based on the concept of reprographic cameras. With increasing resolution and new features such as anti-shake, digital cameras are becoming an attractive alternative to regular scanners. While still disadvantages compared to traditional scanners, digital cameras offer advantages such as speed, portability and smooth scanning of thick documents without damaging the spine.
